Even more telling is the choice of speakers. If Brookings is interested in a real discussion, there are plenty of experts around who won’t pull their punches. Names like Pat Choate, Kevin Kearns, Alan Tonelson, and James Fallows come to mind. As for the speakers Brookings has actually chosen, I cannot find any record of any of them ever mentioning the contrary evidence on the Japanese economy. Indeed to the extent that the speakers have expressed themselves on the subject they come across as faithful conduits of Tokyo’s “lost decades” publicity.
