THE ‘90S BOOM WASN’T AMERICA’S FIRST BOOM
Of course, for all the talk of the New Economy represented by the 1990s expansion, it wasn’t the first expansion in U.S. history. Back in the 1960s, the U.S. economy grew robustly as well. Chart Five shows the growth in manufacturing during the 106-month 1960s boom. Incidentally, economists agree that the best way to compare performance during different time periods is to compare various booms and various busts, rather than comparing decades. So that’s what we’ll be doing when we try to put recent economic performance into context.
